As an aspiring sports business professional, I have heard
multiple tips in order to find success. We all hear them all the time. Take the
initiative. Make sure to network. Study hard and get good grades. Make a good
first impression. All of these tips are important, however, one that often does
not get said a lot is to be knowledgeable. It is highly important to read up on
the current issues facing the sports business world and to be able to talk
about them.
When meeting individuals who are already professionals in
the industry, it is important for them to know you know what you are talking
about. Simply stating you have always had a passion for sports, puts you in a
category of millions. The goal is for you to stand out. A great way of doing
this is having knowledge about the different issues going on. A better answer
to the question of why you want to pursue a sport management degree would look
something like this, “I am still exploring my options, however, after learning
how to create a marketing deck for one of my classes, I am interested in sports
marketing and sponsorship.” By answering like this, others know that you are
aware of what you are talking about and it makes you stand out. Professionals
will be more likely to connect with you and help you out if they know this.
My advice is to read everyday. Read the Sports Business
Journal and other blogs and websites. Make sure you know what is going on in
the business of world of sports. It might sound like a tedious task, but it
will only help you when you are networking and interviewing for jobs. As they
say, knowledge is power, and I believe that is something we should not forget.
