Game On! Sports Video Games Making Big Bucks

As this article is being written I am sitting at my desk at work doing work and school related tasks. What would I like like to be doing instead? I would love to be in gym shorts playing the newly released EA Sports NCAA Football 14 in the comfort of my apartment, but that will have to wait until later. There are those dedicated fans around the country that would rather use their sick days to go to their local gaming shop, getting in line, and purchasing their copy of the newest sports video game. Will some people think that there is something wrong with that? Of course. You know who doesn’t mind thousands of grown men taking off work to buy their products? EA Sports, gaming stores, the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, and so on. For most sports these games are digital jackpots.

For me, twice a year, I walk into my local GameStop and throw all of my money at them for NCAA Football and Madden. Like wise so do millions of other American football fans around the country. Madden 13 (last years edition) sold 1.6 million copies in the first week it was released. 1.6 million copies in a week means about $96,000,000 in sales for EA Sports and all who they divide the sales with. Remember that’s only the first week. I’ll stop forcing my American football numbers at you and pull out the big guns now. Lets talk about FIFA. In a week 4.5 million copies were sold. In a month 7.4 million copies were sold. That means a sales total around $444,000,000. I can barely even read that number let along fathom that much money. Of course FIFA is a world wide game unlike American football, but anyway you cut it that’s a lot of money.

The digital age has revolutionized the sports industry. At one point television was the future of sports, but video games is a whole new level for digital sports media. These games run for about $60 a piece and can range above $100 for special editions. Yes, millions go into making these games, but how much can mass production of a disk and a plastic case cost? Most likely those who put the in the time, effort, and money into these games are making way more than their investment back. Will these games ever really effect the teams that are featured on them? Probably not because those teams are in business to play their respective games, but I’m sure it’s nice for those organizations to reap the rewards.
