This week the Drexel Connection spotlights Haig Abnous. Haig is currently a Junior Agent for the NOVO Agency. The NOVO Agency represents NFL Athletes and former athletes such as LaMichael James, Joey Porter and John Elway. Haig attended Arizona University as an undergraduate communications major where he also corner back for the Arizona Football team. He ended up earning a private work out with the New England Patriots as well as the Hartford Colonials of the UFL. During minicamp, Haig also played with the San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League. Haig is now an online student at Drexel’s graduate program getting his masters, which is now a mandatory task before he can be approved by the NFLPA as a certified agent.
After deciding the football career wasn’t for him, Haig ended up becoming as the recruiter executive assistant to the CEO of Neurasoft. After working for Neurasoft for 6 or so months, he received a phone call from a friend of his letting him know about the opening with the NOVO Agency.
Haig goes into
this when I asked him how he got to the point he is today.
“I
would say by my connections. Meeting people that spread the word about me and
was given the chance work at the agency.”
Like every other
agency, the people working in them are always doing multiple tasks trying to
keep everyone happy. Haig mentions that,
“Everyday
is different. One day I will be focused on marketing and getting players set up
with new deals. Deals such as card signing, company sponsorships and or public
signings. Other days I will be doing workout plans for players, making sure
they are set for off season training.”
Haig understands
that at times it feels as if he is baby-sitting his clients but at the same
time he loves the idea of helping people. He mentioned that ever since he was
little that this act was something he loved doing. Haig gets a warm feeling in
his heart when knowing the fact that he is doing good by people and that his
clients trust him in doing so. Haig, although he does not have the ability to
have his own clients at the moment, works very closely with his boss’ (Jeff
Sperbeck) clients.
I proceeded to
ask Haig what his biggest piece of advice to someone looking to get into the
sport industry and specifically the agent industry.
“Never
give up, just when you think its over something turns out. So never never never
give up. Keep pushing forward. As always, never stop networking. It always
helps to connect with people and you never know where one handshake or one
follow up could lead to.”
Haig really
stressed this concept because of the way his connections worked out for him and
his background in the industry.
We are very
proud to have Haig as part of the Drexel Family and the Drexel Connection.
