Water Cooler Talk: What to do Over Co-op

Co-op is right around the corner for a lot of us.  This is always a nice time of the year because we are done being full time students and can just focus on gaining professional experience.  If this is your first co-op what you might not realize is how much free time you are going to have.  You should use this free time wisely and try to develop yourself professional and personally.  I have come up with a few suggestions for things to do over these next six months.

Water Cooler Talk: UFC in 2014

If you think about the UFC and the best fighters in the sport usually three names come to mind: Anderson Silva, George St. Pierre, and Jon Jones.  These three fighters are usually the three names of who fans and commentators toss out for best pound for pound fighters.  Silva has recently lost two fights in a row and broken his leg in half.  Who knows when he will be able to fight again and if he will ever be able to compete at the level he used to.  St. Pierre decided to vacate his belt and give up fighting for a while.  Jones has not fought since September and has postponed his fight three times against Glover Teixeira.  With these three stars futures in doubt, I have come up with a few suggestions for what the UFC should do to continue its strong brand.

Water Cooler Talk: Giving Back

Today is Thanksgiving, a day to be thankful for everything in your life and a good time to reflect on the last year.  I am very thankful to be where I am right now.  I have about a year left of my undergraduate studies and have made many great connections during my two coops.  I have met a lot of great friends while at Drexel and stayed in touch with my closest friends from high school.  In the spirit of the holiday, I am going to leave you guys with a great piece of advice: always try to give back.

Water Cooler Talk: Interviewing Keys to Success

Coop search can be a very stressful time.  I am searching for my third coop and honestly this one has been the most stressful out of all of them.  This week the interview requests come out for A round.  The interview is the most important part of the coop process.  Your resume was able to get you the interview but now you need to show the company you are the person for the job.  From my experiences I have learned a few keys that can help during the interview.

Water Cooler Talk: Never Forget Who Your Friends Are

College can be one of the most stressful times of your life.  You have to balance every aspect of your day to day activities which include school, work and possibly an internship.  It never seems like there are enough hours in a day to get everything done.  Even with your hectic schedule one thing you must do is always make time for your friends and yourself.

Water Cooler Talk: Adding Value to Your Season Ticket

After a decline in attendance numbers the past couple years, the NFL is trying to boost sales by giving away NFL Red Zone for free to all the season ticket holders.  There are about one million season ticket holders and they all will receive the free mobile version of Red Zone.  There are many benefits that adding this feature will bring to season ticket holders.

Water Cooler Talk: Setting Goals and Achieving Them

Everything during your college life can be super stressful.  Between coop, class work, extra-curricular activities, and anything else that you may do it feels like there are not enough hours in the day to do everything.  I believe a good way to cut down on the stress is to try to do something that you never have done before.  Make it a goal of yours to accomplish this and after you succeed you will feel great.  It will also make everything in your life seem easy compared to your accomplishment.  This may seem like an added stress but like I just said the feeling of completing the task will make it better.

Water Cooler Talk: Coming Together in Times of Tragedy

This week the sport's world was rocked with the devastating events that happened at the Boston Marathon.  Three people were killed and 176 people were injured some very seriously.  In times like these sports help everyone come together and try to forget about the terrible events that took place.  Here are some of the best examples of this over the past couple days.

Water Cooler Talk: Case Study on Controversial Sponsorship

Florida Atlantic University was recently in the news for all the wrong reasons.  They had agreed to a naming rights deal for their stadium with GEO Group.  GEO Group has a controversial past and also runs for profit prisons.  This decision caused a lot of backlash not only from the students but also the community.  Even though the company’s founder gave a lot of money to the scholarship programs at the school this was not enough to stop the backlash.  Finally earlier this week after a month and a half of controversy, Florida Atlantic dropped their deal with GEO Group.

Water Cooler Talk: March Madness Money

Today is one of the best days of the year, the first day of the NCAA Tournament.  This has become a huge stable for the month of March.  Millions of people will fill out brackets including the Barak Obama.  All of this leads to so much money for many different people.  The people that benefit the most are the NCAA, the teams and the conference the team is from, and bookmakers.

Water Cooler Talk: NFL Team in Los Angeles Continues to be Delayed

AEG’s plan to bring a stadium to downtown Los Angeles is dead according to Yahoo Sports author Jason Cole.  One of the biggest problems with the deal is the economics behind it.  The cost would be at least 1.8 billion.  This amount causes a problem for both AEG and whichever team ends up relocating to Los Angeles.  Another problem with this plan is that NFL told the owners that no team would be moving to Los Angeles for the 2013 season.

Water Cooler Talk: What to do about the NBA All-Star Game

The NBA All-Star game was this past Sunday and like always it was a very high scoring game with virtually no defense played at all.  The game lately has not been exciting and it doesn’t help when All-Star Saturday has been lackluster.  For this post I am going to compare the NBA All-Star game TV ratings to the other major sports.  I also asked fellow Sport Management Students Kevis Pinto, Michael Proska, and Lindrit Shkodra what they felt could be done to make the game gain viewership.

Water Cooler Talk: What Super Bowl Commercials Worked and What Didn’t

Super Bowl Sunday is one of the best days of the year to be a football fan.  This year the game was very competitive but the Baltimore Ravens were able to come out on top.  The game is great but my favorite part of the Super Bowl is the commercials.  This year I felt that the commercials were a little disappointing.  Even with the disappointment there were some that stuck out and others that just flopped.  I am going to talk about a couple commercials that I liked and some that I did not like.

Water Cooler Talk: Interviewing Tips

B round for Coop opened this week and I know this makes a lot of people nervous.  You now have to go through the whole process of interviewing with different companies again.  Interviewing can be the most nerve racking part of Coop.  I have asked some of your fellow students, Hayley Zedeck, Kevin Rossi, and Brian Palmer, what their best advice would be when going to an interview.
