I’d like to tell you a story about Tina’s Lemonade Stand.  Tina launched her lemonade stand business in Haddonfield, NJ on Grove Street.  Business picked up quickly; sales weren’t bad.  Tina believed in the power of sales data and hence tracked her customers and how much lemonade they purchased.  Tina knew that her average customer bought two (2) glasses of lemonade per month.

Tina’s best customer was a gentleman named Bob.  Bob loved Tina’s lemonade, so much so that he bought 80 glasses per month!  Some on the way to work, some after a long bike ride – never a bad time for a glass of Tina’s lemonade.  Bob alone represented 35% of Tina’s lemonade revenue.

One day, Tina went shopping to Shop-Rite instead of Wegman’s and found a new brand of lemonade that would reduce her costs by 10%.  Naturally intrigued by the opportunity to reduce cost, Tina stocked up on the cheaper lemonade.  The next day, Bob came by to purchase a glass.  He took a sip, and thought “ewww, what happened to the lemonade?”  He politely smiled at Tina, took his glass of lemonade with him, and never stopped at Tina’s stand again.

Sure, Tina saved 10% on cost-of-goods.  But there went 35% of revenue out the door.  And why did this happen?  Because Tina failed to take into account the opinion and preference of her best customer.  Tina did eventually switch back to the old lemonade, but it was too late.  Bob’s new love was a Starbucks Grande Latte.

Sports teams could benefit from understanding this story.  What Bob was to Tina, season-ticket holders are to properties.  And what happens when sports properties don’t listen to their best customers?  Their best customers leave.  And especially for teams that have empty seats already, the loss of a season-ticket holder presents challenges.  The NBA season has 41 regular-season home games.  Lose one season-ticket holder, and now you need 41 new single-game buyers to replace that one body.  Sure seems easier to make one sale than 41.

It has become extremely easy to obtain feedback from all customer types, especially season-ticket holders or the like.  In fact, avid fans want to provide feedback!  Survey response rates for avid fans far outweigh less-engaged fans.  Just a smattering of research methodologies in use today:

- Online surveying of fans/ticket holders contained in the team’s database
- Onsite research of game attendees
- Social media data capture
- Fan panels

There obviously exists no obligation on the part of teams to ask fans for insight before making decisions.  We would certainly not recommend seeking feedback related to on-field personnel matters.  But as many businesses inside and outside of sports now realize, listening to the voice of the customer results in stronger loyalty and profits.

P.S. – Tina eventually had to shutter her lemonade stand and found work as a food server at the Drexel dining hall.  She’s saving her money to eventually start a new market research consultancy.

  3. Norwich look to learn from Sunderland
Football Agent www.indo11.com reported, Norwich City defender Michael Turner wants his side to take a leaf out of former club Sunderland’s book when they face Manchester City.
Sunderland have enjoyed a run of three consecutive 1-0 home wins against the English Premier League champions, the latest coming on Boxing Day, and Turner is looking for the same from Norwich.
He told the club’s website: “It’ll be a tough game against Manchester City – they’re champions of the league and they’ve got world-class players.
“It’s only a few days after Chelsea so it’s going to be tough, and they lost to Sunderland so they’re going to want to bounce back and beat us. It’ll be a tough game whatever happens.
“I think we need to play similarly to the games that we’ve won here (at Carrow Road), keeping it tight and hopefully create chances, score goals, and get something from the game.
“Sunderland have beaten them 1-0 a few times now and they obviously know what to do against them. We just hope to perform like we have done in recent weeks and hopefully get something from the game.”
Norwich’s recent game against Chelsea saw the first defeat for Chris Hughton’s side at home in five matches and Turner feels his side deserved at least a point after Juan Mata’s first-half strike separated the teams.
“It was a tough game, and it was always going to be – they’re a top team with some top players,” Turner said, as reported by Indo Eleven.

  4. PSG keen on Isimat-Mirin
Football Agent www.indo11.com reported, According to L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain are preparing a January bid for Valenciennes defender Nicolas Isimat-Mirin.
The Saints are currently well equipped at the back, but with Diego Lugano and even Mamadou Sakho hoping to leave the club, they need to start thinking about possible replacements.
It is for that reason that the French giants are keeping close tabs on Valencinnes stopper Nicolas Isimat-Mirin, who could arrive at Parc des Princes in the winter transfer window.
Isimat-Mirin, 21, has been in fine form this season, making 18 Ligue 1 appearances and missing just one league fixture, as reported by Indo Eleven.
Paris Saint-Germain plan to purchase the player in the January transfer window, but will probably loan him back to Valenciennes immediately so that he could finish the season at Stade du Hainaut.
L’Equipe reports that France Under-21 international is valued at €5 million, which is well within PSG’s price range.

  5. QPR ready to make move for Fulham defender
Football Agent www.indo11.com reported, Harry Redknapp is looking to lure Fulham captain Brede Hangeland away from one part of West London to another and try to sign him for Queens Park Rangers in the January transfer window.
Redknapp knows just what a tough job he has at Rangers as they are one of the favourites to go down and have won just once in the English Premier League this season.
He now wants to tighten up the defence and will turn to Fulham’s captain in order to do that.
The Norway international has been superb for the Cottagers since joining in 2008 from FC Copenhagen, but contract talks between him and the club seem to have stalled over recent weeks.
His current deal expires in the summer and QPR could take advantage of that, offering him a big money contract in the January window, as reported by Indo Eleven.
There is no doubt that Hangeland would be a great addition to QPR, but he might have his sights set a bit higher as the club from Loftus Road could easily be playing English Championship football next season.
