Derek Jeter only knew one thing for the last twenty years, and that was playing shortstop and being the leader of the New York Yankees. So when he announced his retirement plans prior to the 2014 season, not only was the sports world shocked, many wondered how he would be able to move on from the game he had become accustomed to playing. Derek's life was a set schedule and now he would have to wake up every morning not knowing what his next venture would be. Yes he always expressed interest in one day owning a team, but how would that really fill the void of no longer playing in America's favorite pastime?

Sport for Thought: What the Yankees meant to America following 9/11
By:
Unknown
Every year on September 11, their is a somber feeling in the air and when you turn on the television, we cannot escape the day that lives on in infamy. The attacks on the World Trade Center were absolutely horrific and changed the lives of Americans forever. After watching 9/11 television specials for a majority of the day yesterday, I immediately realized what I should write about for my post this week. Following the events of 9/11, it took quite some time for people to come to terms of what had happened and they did not know what to do next. For millions of people, they turned to baseball. It was something that could take the terrible events out of the minds of millions of people and bring their lives to be as normal as possible for just a few hours each day.

Sport for Thought: Joe Torre's Managerial Greatness
By:
Unknown
On Saturday, August 23, 2014, The New York Yankees retired yet another number into their prestigious monument park in center field. What made this different from all of the other retired numbers, #6 belonged to the beloved long-time Yankee coach, Joe Torre. He is now placed in the same category as some of the greatest baseball players to ever put on a baseball uniform, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio (as well as 14 others).

MLB Labor Lessons in 'Ball Four'
By:
Kevin Rossi
In the current day of free agency, eye-popping contract terms and super agents like Scott Boras, it's hard -- and for some of us, not possible -- to recall a point in time where these things didn't exist. It's even harder to recall a time when the major league minimum salary was in the four figures and the reserve clause was still holding players hostage.
What do you think it was like to be a player back in those times?
Jim Bouton's Ball Four illustrates exactly what it was like. And so much more.

Sport for Thought: What exactly Tanaka's injury means...
By:
Unknown
Another day of baseball has past, and yet another MLB pitcher receives the news of an unfortunate and dreaded elbow injury. However, in the case of Masahiro Tanaka (the brand new $155 million Yankees acquisition and ace of the staff), is hoping to avoid the unavoidable...the now infamous Tommy John surgery. This season has been plagued with pitching injuries, but this instance has to be the most crucial. No team has more invested (money and on-field success) in a pitcher than the Yankees do with Japanese superstar Tanaka.

Oh Captain, My Captain: Retirement of Derek Jeter
By:

Whether you’re a diehard Red Sox fan, or bleed pinstripes, seeing Derek Jeter hang up his spikes will be a very sad moment. Jeter has been the face of the New York Yankees, and arguably all of baseball, for the last decade, and will create a huge whole on not only the left side of the Yankee infield when he retires, but also in the clubhouse. This will mark the second consecutive year that the Yankees will have one of their greats go on a farewell tour, as future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera took one in 2013.

Sport for Thought: Why A-Rod Finally Did the Right Thing
By:

Many argue and ask, when has Alex Rodriguez ever done the right thing? There are constantly stories released from the media attacking him in some way, whether related to his personal life or his baseball career. No matter what this man does it seems to never be the right thing.

Masahiro Tanaka: Did the Yankees Overpay?
By:

by: Bennett Schiff
Throughout the baseball offseason, fans and general
mangers alike were on the edge of their seat waiting for the news of whether or
not the Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Japanese Pacific League would allow
pitching ace Masahiro Tanaka to become available to Major League teams. The
news broke on December 26, 2013, that Tanaka was going to be allowed to come to
America to pitch, and that gave many GMs a very special late Christmas gift.

Yankees and Cano at a Crossroads
By:
Drexel SMTSU
By: Alexa Fontanella
Robinson Cano, a five-time All-Star, whom many consider the top free agent this offseason was originally looking for a 10-year deal worth approximately $300 million. The Yankees however refuse to land another A-Rod like deal and do not want to go down the same path again. Although Cano’s representatives have lowered their bargaining price, the two sides are still nearly $100 million apart. Many experts and fans believe no player is worth that much money, but the Yankees need Cano more than Cano needs the Yankees. The Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers are also legitimate contenders to land Cano due to their presence in the playoffs the past few years, but this top tier free agent wants to stay in the big apple and remain close to his friend and agent, Jay Z. If Cano really wants to make the big bucks, he needs to sign major endorsement deals, and New York City has the largest market for him to achieve that. Roc Nation Sports has already helped Cano land his first big endorsement with Pepsi this year and as long as he continues to produce on the field, he should have no problem receiving more multi-million dollar deals. In the past, the Yankees would give a player of Cano’s caliber, and whom many consider the best second baseman in the game at the prime of his career, the illustrious contract he is asking for, but not this season.

sign of Garber’s commitment to developing the MLS brand and the continuing identification of new markets within North America.

The Empire State of Mind
By:
Unknown
He once claimed he made
the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee could; now he is reppin’ them. It was
announced on Tuesday that Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter) has formed his own sports agency, Roc Nation Sports,
in conjunction with Creative Artists Agency. It didn’t take long before Mr.
Carter found his first client, Yankee standout, Robinson Cano. Cano who had
previously been represented by Scott Boras, seized the opportunity to find
himself a new representative after some disagreement in their priorities. For
Boras it was money, for Cano it was a chance to stay in New York.
