Guard the Post: Notre Dame shows LGBT athletes support, despite Catholic association

Three weeks ago, the University of Notre Dame, possibly the most famous Catholic University in the world, released a video on the internet that has since gone viral. In association with the You Can Play project, Notre Dame's athletic department tells all their athletes, no matter their sexual orientation or sport, that they can play.

Guard the Post: Jan Brewer, sneaky and ignorant is no way to run a state

For some reason, the state of Arizona is very committed to having questionable laws with huge social implications that cause them to lose or almost lose the rights to Super Bowls. In one of the fastest moving stories in weeks, the state of Arizona, specifically Governor Jan Brewer, quickly went from a Governors meeting in Washington, DC to being at the forefront of thousands of tweets, phone calls, and angry emails in protest of Senate Bill 1062.

Learning from Jason Collins

 

As many of us know, last year Jason Collins announced to the world that he is gay and yesterday he became the first openly gay athlete on a team in North America’s four major professional sports. I applaud Collins for all that he has done. In this post, I am not going to write about the politics of what happened or what this means for the LGBT community. However, I want to try to point out what I think we can all learn from Collins about pursuing our goals and dreams both professionally and personally.

While the media was still trying to wrap their minds around the situation with Marcus Smart and those who were tired of the near-24 hours of coverage were taking in some action from Sochi, something happened. Changed happened. Former University of Missouri All-American defensive lineman and National Football League hopeful Michael Sam did something that no NFL prospect had ever done. He announced he is gay.

7 years ago, Sochi, Russia was granted the 2014 Winter Olympic games. At that time, Russia needed the attention that comes with hosting the biggest sporting event in the world. In hindsight, the attention may have been a little bit more than the Russo's were looking for. Anti-gay legislation, money problems, political unrest with the United States and other world powers, threats of terrorist attacks, and bombings in other Russian cities, just to name a few.

Drexel SMTSU Announces Sport For Social Change Conference!

The First Annual Sport For Social Change Conference presented by the Drexel Sport Management Student Union (SMTSU) will be held on Friday October 25^th, 2013 at Drexel University. The conference will be FREE of charge for everyone that attends. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of the James E. Marks Intercultural Center.

The purpose of the Sport For Social Change Conference is to examine how we as a society can change in a positive manner via sport.

Athletes and Twitter: What Can I Say?

We currently live in a very social media driven world and an even more social media driven sports entertainment industry. Twitter is the quickest and most effective way to receive the up to the second updates on your favorite leagues, teams, and players. Remember the days of turning on SportsCenter every morning and night to get that day's news on all your favorite sports? Not anymore. As long as you have a twitter account you can now receive updates by the seconds on the leagues, teams, players, and so much more that you choose to follow. Not only to you get the updates faster, but you also now can choose to only get the news you want to read. Waiting through a whole hour long episode of SportsCenter for the report you want to hear is a thing of the past. A wise, fictional, character once said something that correlates to the social media world perfectly. "With great power, comes great responsibility."
