SMTSU Networking Night - POSTPONED

Unfortunately due to the pending snow storm and Drexel University cancelling all classes and activities on Thursday Feb. 13, 2014, the Drexel SMTSU will need to postpone the scheduled Networking Night and Landmark Americana fundraiser.

We appreciate everybody's patience with the matter as we awaited official word from the University. Stay tuned for updates regarding the Networking Night's rescheduling and big news upcoming for the spring term.

The Drexel SMTSU's next scheduled event will be the week 8 general body meeting on Thursday Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. The theme of the meeting will be announced within the next week.

Enjoy your snow day and stay safe!

State of the Student Union: Welcome Back!

It's hard to believe that the 2013-14 school year is already here, but the Drexel Sport Management Student Union would like to give you a warm welcome back!

The Drexel SMTSU has been hard at work all summer long with some exciting events and opportunities coming up right away. We hope that you are as excited as we are to jump right into things and continue on our journey through the sports industry. Throughout this year, we hope to make that journey as enjoyable as possible and help all of you out along the way. After all, it's sports and, at the end of the day, sports are fun!

As mentioned, we have some exciting things on-tap from the onset of the year that I would like to bring to your attention.

My Experience at The Barclays

For the past 6 months, I have had the privilege of working for the PGA Tour as the Operations Coordinator on The Barclays at Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City, NJ. With a very minimal background in golf I was not sure what I was getting myself into until I actually started back in April. I was not aware that this is one of the five largest tournaments on the PGA Tour as well as the event with the most hospitality structures available on Tour. The Barclays is the first tournament of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which is the postseason where the top 125 players compete for the FedEx Cup.

Leaving Your Mark: Drexel Sport Management Residency Week

Earlier this week, I was asked to speak at Drexel’s Sport Management Residency Week and provide advice and guidance to graduate students.  While this impressive group of students did not need much from me in terms of tips and pointers, my hope is that there was at least one takeaway from the presentation.

Full Court Press: Professionalism on Twitter

Since Twitter emerged into our lives in July 2006 and became a staple in the mobile device landscape, it has developed into much more than a way to communicate with our friends. It’s a source of information and breaking news. It replaces the need to look at a variety of sources for local and national news because it’s all housed in one convenient location. For sports enthusiasts, you don’t have to find the box score or log onto ESPN.com when you want updates. If you follow the “right” people on Twitter, you can access interviews, scoring updates, video replays, and post-game recaps all in one central location on your smartphone.

The Triangle Talks "An Evening with Ethan Zohn"

The Triangle, Drexel University's independent newspaper, covered our event last Tuesday night, "An Evening with Ethan Zohn."  The event was funded by The Good Idea Fund per a request from the Sport Management Student Union.  Reporter Danielle Verghese was granted the assignment, and she spoke with the Drexel SMTSU's President and Co-Founder Kevin Giordano.

Here is Kevin's quote from the piece:

Storify: An Evening with Ethan Zohn

On Tuesday, May 28th, Ethan Zohn spoke with students from Drexel University in a joint event between The Good Idea Fund and the Drexel SMTSU. Ethan Zohn is the winner of Survivor: Africa, founder of Grassroot Soccer, former professional soccer player, and two-time cancer survivor.

Ethan's story is one of survival but also bettering yourself as a human being. His presentation was an emotional rollercoaster through his life experiences and an intrinsic look at ourselves at the same time.  Ethan's words were for much more than just Sport Management students as they ring true in any position of leadership across the board.

Thank you Ethan Zohn for touching the Drexel community.
