Sport for Thought: Wiggins or Love?

Love and Wiggins. Two stars entering different stages of their NBA careers. Is Kevin Love or Andrew Wiggins more valuable to a NBA franchise?

Ever since the NBA Draft occurred, rumors have been swirling about the possibility of the Cleveland Cavaliers acquiring superstar Kevin Love by trading their 2014 #1 draft pick, Andrew Wiggins. Kevin Love is a proven NBA star that is heading into the peak of his career and wants the opportunity to compete for a championship... something he is not doing in Minnesota. Andrew Wiggins, is a tremendous talent coming out of college who has a bright future but has not yet proven himself on the NBA level.

With the addition of LeBron James in the offseason, the Cavaliers' window of opportunity to finally end the drought and win a championship in Cleveland is NOW! Having drafted Andrew Wiggins with the number one overall pick in the draft, Cleveland's future certainly looked bright. But unfortunately, he is still very young and will need time to develop into the player he has the capability to one day become.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have not been very successful the last several seasons even with Kevin Love contributing immensely on the court. Some would say he is wasting his talent for a team that is not showing any effort to improve the pieces around him to provide him with the opportunity to win a championship. Due to their unwillingness to bring in other star players, Minnesota had absolutely no chance to re-sign a player of Love's caliber. Being in Minnesota's situation, they must be willing to trade their star player for a great package of young and talented players in return. Fortunately for them, Cleveland has had the luck of the draw in the last few drafts, and are able to comprise a package that gives fans in Minnesota a reason to be optimistic for the team's future (Wiggins, Bennett, future 1st round picks).

The Timberwolves and Cavaliers are two teams with different situations. Cleveland is built to win now, and Minnesota still needs to develop and bring in young talent to secure a bright future for the franchise. It may not be easy for Cleveland fans to part with their #1 pick, but their will be no complaints when a championship banner is being raised into the rafters of Quicken Loans Arena. LeBron is one determined athlete, but even the greatest of players need help. Kevin Love is that player for Cleveland.
