State of the Student Union: Welcome Back!

It's hard to believe that the 2013-14 school year is already here, but the Drexel Sport Management Student Union would like to give you a warm welcome back!

The Drexel SMTSU has been hard at work all summer long with some exciting events and opportunities coming up right away. We hope that you are as excited as we are to jump right into things and continue on our journey through the sports industry. Throughout this year, we hope to make that journey as enjoyable as possible and help all of you out along the way. After all, it's sports and, at the end of the day, sports are fun!

As mentioned, we have some exciting things on-tap from the onset of the year that I would like to bring to your attention.

First General Body Meeting

We will be holding our first general body meeting of the 2013-14 year on Thursday October 3rd (week 2) from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Seminar Room (004) in One Drexel Plaza.

At this meeting we will be discussing what the Drexel SMTSU's Sport For Social Change Conference is, how you can get involved as a volunteer and planner, and other opportunities that will be available to you throughout the year. Pizza and soda will be served.

If you have any interest - big or small - in volunteering with the Sport For Social Change Conference, writing for The Sports Complex, or simply getting more involved with the Drexel SMTSU, you will want to attend this meeting next Thursday.

Come kick off the new year with your Drexel Sport Management friends, talk sports, and get involved!

Sport For Social Change Conference

As announced earlier in the month, the Drexel SMTSU will be holding the first annual Sport For Social Change Conference at Drexel University on Friday October 25th (week 5).  The conference will dive into answering the question of how can we help move society in a positive direction via sport? Over the course of four presentations, students, faculty, and professionals will have the opportunity to hear from those on the front lines of social progress while also adding to the industry-wide conversation.

The first pair of speakers have been officially announced!

The first is Patrick Hruby from Sports on Earth. Hruby is a writer for the website and covers a variety of issues in sport from NCAA corruption to head trauma to sports facility welfare to racism. Hruby has previously written for ESPN.com, ESPN the Magazine, The Atlantic online, and more.  Hruby will speak to the Sport For Social Change Conference on safety issues and head trauma in sport and offer ideas for how to make the games we love safer from the professional levels all the way down to the youth levels.

Second, we are proud to announce that representatives from the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation will join us for a presentation.  Founded in 2005 by Ed Snider, chairman of Comcast-Spectacor, ESYHF is a youth development organization that uses hockey as the vehicle for development. Vice President and COO, Jim Britt, will be presenting along with other representatives from the organization.  Having ESYHF come to Drexel to present at the Sport For Social Change Conference will strengthen an existing relationship while creating a pipeline for greater volunteer opportunities.

We have more speakers and presenters to announce shortly!

There will be a variety of volunteer and planning opportunities leading up to the event and on event day. If you are interested in being a part of the Sport For Social Change Conference experience, please attend the week 2 general body for details.

Reserve yourself a spot at the conference NOW!

We have a lot upcoming and a lot to be excited for in addition to our daily sports business coverage here at The Sports Complex! These are exciting times for the Drexel SMTSU, and it is the perfect time for you to get involved.  This is your organization, now let's make it the best that it can be.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, reach out to the President's mailbag at ktr36@drexel.edu.
