State of the Student Union: December 2013

It's that holiday time of the year, but more importantly, it's the end of  the fall term. For some, that means their first term at Drexel is now under the belt. For others, it means their time at Drexel is ending. It's a time of excitement and a time of change. To me, it's a time to look back at how far we have all come and look ahead to where we are all going.

In the fall term, we had the inaugural Sport For Social Change Conference. The event was a huge success for all who were involved. The SMTSU benefited greatly from the event in terms of gaining respect and exposure on Drexel's campus and in the city of Philadelphia. Having about 100 come through the doors during the day to see the 11 presenters made it the largest attendance we have had at an event. Looking back, the officers felt the gravity of the event's success, and we hope that showed through to members and attendees alike.

Don't think the SMTSU peaked at the conference, though. We have plenty of great plans for the rest of the year coming. In winter term, we will have a networking event that will allow students to meet hiring professionals from organizations and fields that they want to work with and get their contact information in front of them. We have run a similar event in the past, and we expect everyone to gain either from the professional networking and development advice or expanding personal networks.

Before our winter networking event is something much closer. Tomorrow, we will have our final general body meeting of the year where we will thank our the SMTSU's co-founder, former president and current senior adviser Kevin Giordano for his work with the organization and congratulate him on his upcoming graduation. We will also be playing an SMTSU favorite sports catchphrase. Pizza and soda will be served.

Even as we look back and look forward, good luck on the end of your term right now. Final exams and projects can be overwhelming at times, but with a well-thought out plan and solid time management, everything is manageable.

Appreciate how far you have come, live in the now, and look ahead for what the future holds.

Full speed ahead.
