Outside the Octagon: Team MMA, The Next US Sport?

About a week ago Deadspin posted an article about Team MMA.  If you have not seen the video I highly recommend you click on the link and check it out.  To summarize the video, it is a 5 on 5 match between Poland and Sweden.  Each person fights one person on the other team.  When someone wins they are now free to help out any of their teammates.  You can imagine that this is when it starts to get pretty insane.

Watching this video got me thinking if Team MMA could make its way over to the states.  I spoke with amateur fighter Bridget McEliece about what she thought about this concept of fighting.  She said the video was very interesting to watch and she described it as a “controlled brawl”.  McEliece brought up a good point when talking about if she can see this translating to the United States.  “This could end up being a bridge between the UFC and WWE.”  Team MMA could be a good way to combine the flash and showmanship of WWE with the real fighting of the UFC.
I like the idea of the combination of WWE and UFC but personally I do not see this translating well.  These fights could end up pretty bad when it turns into one fighter against three or more.  MMA is already dealing with head injury problems after a recent study showed that brain damage is higher in MMA than football and boxing.  Multiple guys hitting the same person will not be any better for the head.

In the end either of us could be right.   I am sure no one could have predicted how popular MMA especially UFC has become.  WWE is even more popular so combing the storytelling of WWE and the real fighting of MMA could have potential to be huge.  Regardless of your opinion, I am sure we can all agree that Team MMA is very interesting to watch.

  1. There would have to be so, so many rules for this. Believe it or not, the UFC is actually quite controlled by rules as opposed to outside fighting organizations (especially outside of the US).
