S4SC: Drexel SMTSU Announces 2nd Annual Sport for Social Change Conference

The Drexel Sport Management Student Union (SMTSU) is pleased to announce details for the second annual Sport for Social Change Conference.

Capitalizing on the success of the first edition of the conference last October, the SMTSU will hold the Sport for Social Change Conference on Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held in the Academic Bistro on the sixth floor of the Paul Peck Problem Solving and Research Center (aka Academic Building) on the corner of 33rd and Race St.

Holding the Sport for Social Change Conference in the Academic Bistro offers a unique opportunity to bring together all of the disciplines housed in the new Center for Hospitality and Sport Management. Students from Drexel’s culinary arts and hospitality programs will be preparing and serving all three of the meals during the event: breakfast, lunch and appetizers.

Just like last year, the event will be FREE and open to all.

Remembering Dave O'Brien

On March 1, Dave O’Brien passed away after a long fight with cancer at the age of 57. Drexel University lost a professor. Drexel Sport Management lost the one who built up the program. Temple, Long Beach State and Northeastern lost a former director of athletics. Students and faculty everywhere lost a teacher, a mentor, and most of all a friend.

Here are some reflections students of Drexel made of Dave O’Brien:

Top 5 Drexel Athletics Moments of 2013

With a new year comes new goals, new hopes, new dreams, and most of all, the clean slate to do it. With a new year also comes looking back at the previous year to assess what went wrong and what went right, what we can do differently and what should continue. Drexel is never looked upon as a powerhouse in the realm of collegiate athletics, but the school certainly fields teams across the board that should not be taken lightly. The team with perhaps the largest following at Drexel -- the men's basketball team -- had an uncharacteristically down year in 2013, but the rest of the athletic department was right there behind them to pick them up and make 2013 a tremendous year in Drexel athletics.

Here are the top five moments in Drexel athletics in 2013:

The Drexel Connection: Michael Lawson

This week the Drexel Connection spotlights Michael Lawson. Michael currently is the CEO and President of 4A Management as well as being a professional sports agent. Some of his more popular and known clients include Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans and Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Michael is very relatable to us as college kids because he too started off as an intern somewhere very small. Specifically he started off interning with the Cincinnati Cyclones. From there he went on to work alongside our fellow Drexel SMT Professor Brett Burchette with Nelligan Sports Marketing as the regional director.

Guard the Post: The Current (and Future) State of the NCAA

In today's (social) media landscape, stories travel faster than an Alabama fan leaving the Stadium in the 2nd quarter with the Tide up by 40. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has been at the forefront of the sport conversation for weeks now, especially during this football season. From Schooled: The Price of College Sports to Arian Foster, and All Players United (APU) to the Ed O'Bannon case, the NCAA is an massive entity that is continuously being criticized by everyone across the country.

Leaving Your Mark: Drexel Sport Management Residency Week

Earlier this week, I was asked to speak at Drexel’s Sport Management Residency Week and provide advice and guidance to graduate students.  While this impressive group of students did not need much from me in terms of tips and pointers, my hope is that there was at least one takeaway from the presentation.
