Co-Op Confidential: Kevin Rossi

Name: Kevin Rossi
Year: Pre-Junior
Company: Temple University, Athletic Communications
Location: Temple University

Who are the Temple Owls?

The Temple Owls are Temple University athletic department in Philadelphia, PA.  Bill Bradshaw currently serves as the Director of Athletics for the program that is home to 22 varsity sports.  Caught in the conference realignment shuffle, Temple spent one year in the Big East and will be playing in the American Athletic Conference beginning July 1, 2013.  Temple University has an undergraduate enrollment of just under 28,000.  Their president is Neil Theobald.

What are your responsibilities?

Before softball season recently ended, my main responsibility was to work alongside Kelli Sheeshly, the assistant SID in charge of softball.  At the softball games I was able to gain valuable experience in event management while also getting to learn some of the various in-game technologies used across the industry.  When the softball team is not at home, I work on a wide range of research projects centered around keeping  Temple's athletics website (owlsports.com) up to date and around the transition from the Big East to the American Athletic Conference.  As I near the halfway point of my time at Temple, a majority of my work will likely be centered around preparations for the upcoming football season.

Do you like your job?

Umm, I hate it... Just kidding, seriously, I love my job so far.  Temple's Sports Information Director, Larry Dougherty, has be fantastic to work with.  I can really tell that he wants me to learn because I always have relevant projects to work on.  Also, I really enjoy working with the people in the office.  The previous interns that just finished up were helpful in getting me started and everyone else is always willing to lend a helping hand when needed.

Downsides?

As it seems with any internship in the sports industry, the internship is unpaid.  Honestly, it doesn't bother me anymore because I've come to expect it.  I try to use it as daily motivation to one day hold a paying job.  A boy can dream, right?

What are you looking forward to?

I am really looking forward to continuing to get to know the people that I work with and strengthen my network.  The collegiate sports information field is a very tight-knit group because there is always an inherently constant communication, but no group is closer than the City 6 schools in Philadelphia.  That closeness is something that I hope to one day find myself in the middle of because there are very few cities with college athletic departments that work so close.  Also, I am excited for football season to begin and hopefully get to work on gamedays throughout the season and get to know more people within the university and learn the tricks of the trade.

  1. Can't say I'm not jealous about your Athletic Communications experience compared to my time at Penn (as great as it was!) Glad to hear you're enjoying it!
